Before much of Panama could be reached by road, Robert H. Stewart traveled its rivers, mountains, and forests by canoe, horseback, on foot, and by light aircraft—reading in its rocks a history millions of years old.
From the jungles of Darién to the high Altiplano of Bolivia, Stewart devoted much of his life to geological exploration. As a geologist of the Panama Canal, he investigated possible routes for a sea-level canal, helped guide major engineering work at Culebra Cut and the Bridge of the Americas, studied the Bayano and La Yeguada hydroelectric projects, and helped reveal the enormous copper deposit at Cerro Colorado.
His curiosity extended far beyond engineering and mining to fossils, volcanoes, caves, shipwrecks, the inhabitants of peasant and Indigenous communities, and their living conditions in remote areas of Panama and Bolivia.
Drawing on Stewart's field diaries, correspondence, photographs, maps, and scientific records, anthropologist Stanley Heckadon-Moreno reconstructs a remarkable life of exploration in which geology becomes both science and human history.
