The narrow Isthmus of Panama serves as the setting for the real life adventures of a cowboy in a hellish jungle, swarming with danger around every bend in the river and curve in the road.
In the 16th century, the mighty Chagres River was the watery highway that led to the Cruces Trail; a Spanish colonial road over which Incan gold and silver from the Viceroyalty of Peru made its final overland journey to board boats bound for the treasuries of Aragon and Castile.
Centuries later the town of Aspinwall was created out of the swamps to become the Caribbean terminal for a new railroad. Panama City, on the Pacific side of the Isthmus, became the point of departure for the hordes of prospectors who scrambled northwards towards the newly discovered gold fields of California.
Our tale is set in the 1850s when the noose and summary executions were the law of the land. Entrusted by a New York City shipping company, Randolph Runnels, Texas Ranger, was hired to bring to heel roving bands of marauders on the Yankee Strip, the narrowest portion of land in the Western Hemisphere and a perfect crossing for this singular railroad between two oceans.
